Phone Hotspot Not Working? Fixes for iPhone and Android

Your phone shows hotspot active, but the laptop or tablet sees no internet—or won't connect at all. Before changing settings, confirm the phone itself can browse the web on cellular data. If the phone has no data, the hotspot has nothing to share. Also check for a local carrier outage; if calls fail in your area, wait for service to return before troubleshooting. Once data is confirmed, work through the fixes below in order; most issues resolve within the first three steps.

Quick Checks

  • Can the phone browse the web on its own? If not, the problem is mobile data, not hotspot.
  • Airplane mode is off. It kills all wireless radios and disables hotspot instantly.
  • You haven't hit your monthly data limit. Carriers commonly throttle or block hotspot after a cap.
  • Your plan includes hotspot. Older or prepaid plans sometimes require an add-on.
  • No active VPN on the phone itself; some VPN profiles block local network sharing.
  • Date and time are set automatically. Wrong time breaks TLS handshakes and makes sites fail even when connected.

iPhone Fixes

  1. Toggle Personal Hotspot off and on. On iPhone 15 and newer, this is in Settings > Personal Hotspot. On older models, it may be Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot. Switch off, wait 10 seconds, switch back on.
  2. Restart both devices. A stuck DHCP lease often clears with a fresh reboot.
  3. Check for carrier settings. Go to Settings > General > About. If a carrier update prompt appears, install it and retry.
  4. Update iOS via Settings > General > Software Update.
  5. Reset network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, so have them ready.

If hotspot still won't activate, low-power mode can suppress background radios. Disable it temporarily in Settings > Battery. On iPhone 13 and later, toggle Voice & Data to 4G for 30 seconds, then back to 5G; some carrier aggregation bugs prevent hotspot from starting on 5G alone. Location Services must also be on for some carriers to verify your line; enable it in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Android Fixes

  1. Toggle hotspot off and on through Quick Settings or Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & Tethering.
  2. Restart the phone and the connecting device.
  3. Switch the hotspot band. Older laptops only support 2.4 GHz; change from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz in hotspot settings if connections drop repeatedly.
  4. Reset network settings in Settings > System > Reset Options > Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth.
  5. Check for a system update in Settings > Software Update.
  6. Disable battery optimization for hotspot. If the connection drops after a minute, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > Hotspot App > Battery > Unrestricted.

If you use a third-party hotspot app, switch back to the built-in Android tethering. Third-party apps often lack the system permissions needed to hold the Wi-Fi radio active. As a test, try USB tethering: plug the phone into the laptop with a cable and enable USB Tethering in hotspot settings. If USB works but Wi-Fi hotspot doesn't, the Wi-Fi radio or antenna is the likely culprit.

Fixes for the Connecting Device

The phone may be fine, but the laptop or tablet refuses the connection.

  • Forget the hotspot network on the other device and re-enter the password. Passwords with special characters sometimes fail on older Windows or macOS versions; use letters and numbers only as a test.
  • Temporarily disable VPN or firewall software on the connecting device.
  • On Windows, run the network troubleshooter: Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network Troubleshooter. If it reports a disabled Wi-Fi adapter, enable it in Device Manager.
  • On macOS, remove the network preference file and reconnect; on ChromeOS, sign out and back in to refresh network profiles.
  • Update the Wi-Fi adapter driver on Windows via Device Manager > Network Adapters.

Deeper Troubleshooting

If basic steps fail, check these less obvious causes:

  • APN settings. Go to Settings > Mobile Network > Access Point Names and reset to default. Wrong APN values allow signal but block data sessions.
  • SIM card. Power off, remove the SIM, reinsert it firmly, and power on. A loose SIM stops the phone from registering on the network.
  • Test with another phone on the same plan. If the second phone hotspots fine, the issue is your device; if both fail, the carrier or account is likely the cause.
  • Check for IMEI or SIM lock issues. If the phone was recently repaired or the SIM swapped, the carrier may not have provisioned hotspot on the line.
  • Firewall apps on the phone itself can block sharing. Temporarily disable any third-party firewall or security app.

When to Contact Support

Reach out to your carrier or manufacturer if:

  • Network resets and restarts don't restore hotspot after 30 minutes of trying.
  • Other phones on your plan hotspot without issues but yours does not.
  • The phone shows full signal but hotspot never activates.
  • There was water damage, a hard drop, or the SIM tray is damaged.
  • You need a SIM replacement or carrier reprovisioning, which usually requires a support call.

Bottom Line

Start with data, airplane mode, and a restart. Then toggle hotspot, update software, and reset network settings. Check APN and SIM if the problem persists. Most hotspot failures are software glitches, not hardware failures—but if a full network reset doesn't help, the SIM card or carrier provisioning is the next place to investigate. Keep your carrier's support number handy; line provisioning issues are common and often fixed in minutes once you reach the right department.
